  • Xanga Hate

Recently, one of my now ex-hater decided to apologize to me.  I’m leaving her anonymous since it was a private message.  She wrote:

Her message was much appreciated, but as someone who gets attacked on a regular basis, I always find it funny how people I don’t even know claim to “hate” me.  It’s amusing when they call me out for stating my thoughts and get “disappointed” in me when they disagree.  I’m also made fun of for my physical disability, and accused of starting drama when defending my friends.

Do I really hold such power to affect them in such a way that in June alone, more than seventy entries were written about this “cripple” as they like to call me?

frozencherries even drew this picture of me a while ago:

I personally don’t hate anyone here to be completely honest.

Reader, how do you feel about the hate on Xanga, or the Internet in general?  Is it stupid to hate strangers in cyberspace?  What are some of your thoughts on this mob mentality?

  • I don't hate anyone unless it's a damn good reason, and it's always personal when I hate someone. Most of the time, I just dislike people.

  • Sometimes internet hate bothers me.  But most of the time it just seems stupid.

  • I think it's absolutely ridiculous. I would understand how we may not share the same opinion on some issues, but going as far as hating (such a strong, violent word it has become), is just too much. And it is a testament how the internet has governed our lives to the point that we let such things get the better of us.

  • Meh, I think that hate on the internet is just a person's way of venting their hate for something else. Like, say for example Boy gets annoyed that his Girl is hanging out with too many boys, but Boy won't tell Girl that because he's a chicken. Thusly, Boy goes on internet and bashes everyone who disagrees with him on a topic about significant others on a board, even though it never related to him.

That, or they have one hell of a dominant personality; hate makes them feel superior sometimes. Meh. Weird people.

    I've never gotten a hater, so I wouldn't know. Just a hypothesis.

  • people hate on the internet because it gets out their anger without ruining their facade.

  • its easy to piss people off and get ticked off yourself this is the 2nd blog i've seen about "trolls" on xanga. i admit, its easy to laughing and make fun of/blow off a dumb person's[or a troll just tryig to raz people] comment i will never do something unless they do it something first

  • It's the internet. To "hate" someone is freaking retarded.

  • Most people just act like they hate you to get attention. There are people on Xanga that I strongly dislike and I would want to have absolutely nothing to do with them in real life. The fact is, there are people who are awful human beings on this planet and some of them are on Xanga. But hate involves too much effort and caring to apply it to most anyone.

  • As sad as it is, I think it's become "cool" to bash you.  So those concerned with seeming "cool" do it.  You told me once I was the only person that has written a post in your defense.   I'm proud to have done it!

  • I don't hate anybody, but I do think certain people are full of sh-t.

  • We're all different people and we can't always agree with each other.  In blogs, we're supposed to be able to share our thoughts and we can get feedback on it.  We can think and share whatever we want.  If someone disagrees with you, that's okay.  They should leave a comment explaining their reasoning.  It shouldn't come in the form of a personal attack and it shouldn't be a judgement on the person.

It's easy to hate someone online because you don't know them and they don't know you.  It's impersonal that way.  It's easy to attack each other in words.  I don't really take what I hear online seriously.  I don't have a lot of traffic in my blog, so I don't worry about a lot of things like this.  When I comment, I'm usually calm and civil and constructive with the aim of discussion.
I don't really have much to say about the mob mentality.  Honestly, it's not something I pay attention to on Xanga.  I'm interested in certain things and not the drama.  There's way too much blogging on Xanga and the Xanga community.  That's fine and people are interested in it.  I'm not and I tend to read blogs that interest me.  Sometimes I come across some like this that are recommended.

  • i think that the word hate is used way too frequently on the internet and in culture in general. it's often passed off for passing disagreements, minor annoyances, or if someone makes a joke about someone else or is snickering behind their back ... thats not real hate.

  • @mayanao - dont be a HADER! :P

  • It's easier to hate than to show compassion and love.  Most people think the opposite though.  I find that hating something or someone without really knowing them is rather silly.

  • I hate the hate. But I can't publicly hate the hate without hating. I hate that.

  • It is very easy to hate someone over the internet, since you'll never actually met or bump into the person. I tend to keep a low profile though.

  • that drawing is hilarious I must say

  • Remember: It's better to be hated for who you are, than to be loved for someone you are not. In time we hate that which we often fear. This is due to the fact hatred is the coward's revenge for being intimidated. So the answer to your question is when people don't know who to hate, then they start to hate themselves, so they must find something to hate.

  • I've come to expect the hate, lol. I still care about the mean things being said about me sometimes, unfortunately... which sucks. But mostly I try not to show it and just go on with being awesome, haha.

As far as it being stupid to hate people in cyberspace... Well, it's no more stupid than hating people in real life is. I guess it's just easier online though.

  • Honestly, I'm not sure why it all started. I don't know much about you or the drama - just that a lot of hater posts about you have been made.

  • The people that are hated on most get the most love.

  • why can't we all just get along?

don't you EVER stop doin what you do. :D

  • People should think that those who sign up for a Xanga account are not all mentally challenged or psychopaths. Some of us are still geniuses, even when we're having our goofy moments.

  • I think it's terrible when people post that kind of thing; can't they just post on the topic and leave the particular person out of it? Or at least, if they want to cite that person as an example, keep unrelated attacks out of it? How dare anyone make fun of you for a physical disability which is not your fault in the least? Not being able to walk is not going to affect your opinion on the movie Avatar. (Actually it might, considering the main character and his disability. Maybe this is a bad example, heh.)

I've always liked you, Ricky. :D I don't always agree with what you say (though most of the time we hold the same or similar opinions) but that doesn't make either of us any less awesome! :D

  • Wow, that picture is pretty fucked up.

I don't really see what the point of hating someone you've never even met is.  All this online hate really pisses me off.  I mean, I can understand disagreeing with someone's opinions on things, but they're their opinions.  So, people really shouldn't go so crazy, especially when it's online and they don't know the person.
Meh.  I just wish everyone in the world would just chill out and at least try to get along.  And Ricky, have you ever even disclosed your age on here?  I was just wondering, because the person who drew that picture depicted you as having no hair on the top of your head.  Since I've been subscribed to you, you've had the default picture that you have now.  I don't know..maybe they're trying to also poke fun at "cripples," as they like to call you, by portraying them as fat, angry, and unattractive?

  • Sure your post gets annoying sometimes especially if you keep reposting the same thing so it shows up as the first one on your subscription list.

But honestly you should feel accomplished with haters. Because love you or hate you, they're always thinking of you 'cause you always find a way to cross their mind. (yay for mind fucking!) You should be flattered with yourself. They just hate you for who you are & that you do things your own way & don't have the same mindset as they do.

  • It's so much easier to be confrontational and rude over the internet than it is in real life because the bark is bigger than the bite. You can just hide behind a fake photo and get your kicks out of pissing people off without getting yourself beat to a pulp.

I think the trolls should stop their trolling (and giving people like me with heart problems anxiety attacks) and the haters should grow up and learn to avert their eyes. If you don't like it, GTFO. You weren't invited anyway.

  • yes very very stupid. THERE JUST PUSSIES.

doesnt matter anyway cause i <3 you ;)

  • It is just mob mentality. It is reinforced here because it is done from a distance

  • Once again, late to the party. I am pretty outraged, though, that people call you (or anyone) a "cripple," and really irritated (REA LLY IRRITATED) that people would waste 70 posts and all those words on hating someone they have likely never known personally.  Xanga are humans, and as such they are going to annoy and frustrate, just as they will sometimes please and pander. Those we can tolerate we keep as Friends. For the others, we just unFriend. Is that really so hard? Why waste energy hating? We don't have to like everyone! Oh, so irritating.

Look, Ricky, fair warning: If you turn out to be a jerk, I will un-Friend. And, I hope you'll do the same. If my posts make you want to hurt small animals, please save the planet and click that little edit button instead.

  • It's just really a waste of time, I think. It's ridonkulousss.

  • i'm sorry. :( i dont really read your blog enough to understand why everyone hates you. but if they have a problem with you, they should stop reading your blog. its pretty simple.

  • I recently came across a xanga hater. It was not hate towards me so much as hate towards black people. "nigger this, nigger that" "chimp this, chimp that". He literally thought that blacks were an inferior group of people; the boy belonged in the KKK. I am somewhat of a sociologist at heart so was interested if I could somehow understand where this hate came from - but in a "safe" environment via the internet. I mean shit, NO one is born with this much hate inside. Through some crazy conversations he began to hate me as well, as I was a "race traitor", and had had "nigger cock" in me before. I soon found out that his cousin was gang raped and murdered by a group of African American men, who he eventually murdered to get revenge. Of course we (rational people) all know that it is illogical to hate an entire group or race based on one single incident but he just could not stop the hating. This particular xanga user is completely anonymous. He makes these "great" claims yet wont sign his name. He will not own them. This shows only one thing: he is ashamed of his views. Deep down he knows that his hate is completely illogical, and hides behind a computer monitor in order to rant and rave. He is egotistical and vain about his ideas online, condescending in his writing, yet is truly a coward at heart. When I pointed this out to him, the poor boy freaked out, calling me a cunt, threatening me with his psychotic ways, the whole nine. All anonymous haters on xanga/online are most likely not haters in real life. You can be whoever you want to online, it's so easy!

  • These people couldn't hurt a fly and so they hurt people on the internet behind a keyboard.

  • Hating anyone online is a waste of time. If someone hates me without even knowing what I am really like then that's their problem. People who make fun of others on here have issues. I wouldn't let it bother me. Take care!

  • I don't know how I am able to always miss all the drama on here.  How could I get someone to hate me and start writing about me?
I have been here a long time and don't really seek attention but you would think someone would have hated me by now.

Did you have a habit of insulting people?  I really don't know why people began hating you in the first place.  I realized that there were ongoing spats between certain xangans but to hate strangers is really kind of silly.

I would think though,  that even negative attention is good for a writer or someone who needs publicity.  I wish people would start hating me.  How do you do it?

I think I insult people but no one ever cares what I say.  Do you go around commenting on people's blogs or do people tell all their friends to go and comment or stuff?  I don't see how people have time to do all this.

I am mentally disabled,  does that count?  Why don't people hate me because I am mentally disabled?  I am a total freak!  What should I do to get people to hate me like they hated you?

By the way,  I am not a hater and generally never hated anyone except Hitler and George W. Bush and now Sarah Palin is beginning to get on my nerves but I think I have to see and hear the person to hate them.

I can't personalize someone through their writing,  I don't think... .I never know what is true and what is just bunk for literary effect...

maybe because i just write whatever off the cuff at the spur of the moment.... Do you plan your writing out?  Mine is just spontaneous...

what kind of disability do you have, I never read about it specifically and why do people care?
    .
    .

  • I have real life haters. They're not too fun to deal with

  • I really do like the picture. Even though that doesn't really look like you, it's kind of bad ass.

I don't hate anyone on Xanga. Some people are silly... and everything they write makes me want to kick babies/puppies with down syndrome. but... w.e.

  • its kind of funny? but thats because maybe im not dead center of it.. IDK tho.. depends on what the hate is for?

  • @anth0nyc - agreed, it's more like dislike than anything. Real hate is something horrible to behold.

I don't hate you. I don't hate anyone. Have no reason to hate..

@summerdreams505Aa -  same here..they are not soo cool..it's downright mean

  • Public entries on xanga are much like extensions to your thoughts. If I read your thoughts and disagree with them, then yes, I might hate you. Typically having an internet barrier makes your commenters very brave, thus resulting in a verbal whiplashing to the author. Nonetheless, however silly it may seem- you are still dealing with a lot of passionate people (bloggers in general) who are not affraid to speak their mind against what they deem wrong in xangaland.

  • That cartoon's messed up.

  • I was just thinking of this the other day! You know like that girl who supposedly got bullied to death, can't quite remember her name. But I feel people use the internet for different reasons. And honestly its ridiculous when people use something given to us to hurt someone else. I mean there really is no label on who can use the internet or not. And if there was pshh i'd say whatever I'm going to use it anyways. People are so blinded with stupiditity.

But then again some people are sensitive to the internet, and I still think that feelings should be respected. And we should not make such a super big deal. Xanga abuse thats something new.

  • C.S. Lewis says it well.  For some, hate is a pleasure.  Giving it up would be like giving up booze, dope, tobacco, overeating, or cheating on your partner.  I don't see any of the last few ending anytime soon.  Why should we hope the first one would just stop?  That would just be wishful thinking.

  • If a person irks me to this point-----> delete them. You can always incorporate newbiess.  To show how much
I care here you go, haha and you have never posted to my blog I don't think...

  • It's really stupid to hate people over the Interbuttz.  If you don't like what they have to say, or you disagree with it, then don't read their stuff!  It's as simple as that.  I'm sure most of those people just want attention anyway.  But seriously, there are better ways to get attention.  Write a really good blog and ask for it to be rec'd or featured on another Xangan's site, like you do with yours.

Anyway, don't ever stop doing what your doing.  I love reading your stuff!
